Conserving the environment is something that mankind has gradually forgotten how to do. In the modern age less and less consideration is taken on how an activity will affect the environment it is in. In recent years environmentalism has benefited from a renaissance with the sudden realisation that without urgent action the planet that we live on will be harmed beyond all help. Environmental conservation starts in your home, in your garden and in your mind. This course will consist of some of the following elements; Introduction to Ancient Woodland, Flora and Fauna identification, Coppicing, Tree Planting, Rhododendron removal, Pond Maintenance, Introduction to Forestry (including tree felling with hand tools), Willow Weaving and more (subject to Ranger weather and season). Please note that this is subject to the weather and seasons.
INTRODUCTION TO GREEN CONSTRUCTION:
25th September
9th October
23rd October
29th January 2011
12th February 2011
5th March 2011
7th May 2011
21st May 2011
11th June 2011
Creating a sustainable future means building new structures in a responsible manner. Green construction methods are often looked down upon as inferior to modern materials, however given the correct tuition traditional sustainable techniques can lead to beautiful and functional buildings that have minimal impact on the environment they inhabit. Old techniques need to be re-learnt and new methods developed to ensure the revival of the world we live in. The two-day course comprises of the following elements; Load Bearing and Timber Framed Straw-Bale building, Log Cabin Construction, a visit to the double-storey timber-framed offices, Rammed Earth construction with a tour of the award winning Eco-Community Hall (with double reciprocal timber roof), Earth Composting Toilets and Reed Bed Grey-Water Filtration.
If you would like to book for any of these courses, then please send your name, address, telephone number and details of which course you would like to book for to admin@hillholtwood.com

Attended the Tree Warden Course on 10th October and what a great day out. The history of ancient woodlands to seeing nicely copised hazle and in the Big Wood the amount of Great Oaks in such a small area was a graet sight and even more so when told these would be used as Family Trees for burial for ever and ever. The only thing I would question is the cost. Thank you rangers and by the way the food was excellent.

Many Thanks for putting on the recent short courses ,,thoroughly enjoyed them.
I took part on the Environmental consevation with Nigel who did an excelent job of showing us around the site and
taking us through some fungi identification then some traditional woodsman and conservation methods.
The following week Bob took us through the step by step methods of rammed earth construction, there was
so much to learn even though his head nearly blew with all the questions i think he covered them all admirably.
The chances to put things into practice, try out new things and apply new skills was very much appreciated.
I can only thank hill holt woods for providing the opportunity to get invloved..
Many Thanks again ..
Dave…
